About Gemma Reynolds
I live my life through a lens. It has always been a passion of mine to capture all walks of life with my camera. From an early age I would play with my fathers Nikon and found it intriguing what stories you could tell with 'light'. When I was just 19 I went traveling to the tropical 'Solomon Islands' in the Pacific Ocean. It was breathtakingly beautiful. I met the most fascinating people and learnt about their way of life. I taught English to the little ones in their leaf hut schools. I swam in the warm waters, spear fished amongst the most incredible phosphorescence I have ever seen. The water was like a veil made up of a million sparkly stars dancing about in my hands. Due to a rather unwanted Island dispute, civil unrest broke out and this stopped all planes flying out of the port. We were actually stuck on a desert island! On meeting some sailors who had been pottering about the islands after having just taken part in a yacht race from Australia, we leapt on board. Sailing away from the tropical bubble we called home, through the outskirts of Papua New Guinea, we arrived at the Great Barrier Reef. The glamorous port of Cairns in Queensland, Australia greeted us with expensive arms! Having spent those past five months living on 'island time' and realising that there is so much more to life than the materialistic things that we can so easily dwell on, I decided that I would have to work in something that really meant something. And that is what I did.
I filmed bottle nose dolphins in the Bay of Islands on New Zealand's North Island. Wild Focus Films took me to Tonga where I filmed the magnificence of the humpback whales. Stray Travel took me on and I photographed the North and South Islands of New Zealand for their adventurous travel brochure. With my love of still photography growing I went on to study a diploma in photography and loved every second of it. My tutor Mel Philips is a constant inspiration to me still in all I do.
My love of London and my roots soon got the better of so I returned to the UK in October 2004. I took a job at a local photography studio in Marlow, Buckinghamshire. I specialised in portraiture, and was made style director. It was here that I realised the real transformation that a great photo can do for someone.
This was the unraveling of how I discovered I love photographing 'everyday people in fashion'.
I went freelance in 2007 and have never looked back. I have a lot of fun with my clients, and just adore capturing something 'wow' for them. I am fortunate to have a beautiful central London studio in W1 and can work on location or abroad.
Wedding photography is a personal experience and to be a part of that is such a delightful treat. I really like to get to know my clients and bring the best out of them. In a short space of time I have been given exclusivity as Conde Nast BRIDES magazines 'Central London Wedding Photographer'. This came out in their directory for May/June 09. Due to popular response I was asked to remain in position for their largest issue in January/February 2010. British VOGUE also approached me to be in their December issue 2009 on their 'Strike a Pose' advertorial. I have met some wonderful wedding planners and seen beautiful venues that I have been delighted to be recommended by in London, Sandbanks and the UK.
I also work for various other exciting photography subjects such as Out of Bounds Music where I do a lot of live gig coverage for some talented artists. I have done album covers for single releases and press shots for the stars such as the deliciously scrummy food writer Gizzi Erskine. Glen Matlock of 'The Sex Pistols' was a laugh and a few years back a personal highlight of mine was photographing Jamie Oliver's daughters third birthday party. Such a lovable family. Whether you are in a band, getting married, had a baby, organising an event, or just want to get some gorgeous photographs, I will rise to the challenge.
